HDCP error, flashing image or black screen with an HDfury Arcana

Copy protection failures rarely announce themselves clearly. You get a message on one device, a picture that flashes every few seconds, or nothing at all — while the same source worked yesterday on a different input.

Fix it in this order

  1. Connect the source straight to the display. If it works there, the fault is in a device between them; if it fails there too, nothing downstream will fix it.
  2. Swap the cable before changing any setting. A marginal cable produces exactly the same symptoms as an HDCP mismatch.
  3. Look up the HDCP version of the display and the receiver separately. A receiver in the middle is a frequent culprit.
  4. Use the conversion. The HDfury Arcana converts HDCP 2.2 to and from 1.4; the HDfury Arcana 2 converts 2.3 to and from 1.4, in either direction.
  5. Reset the handshake. Power everything off, then start the sound system, the HDfury Arcana, the display and the source last.

Which model do you have?

HDfury Arcana (18Gbps). Converts HDCP 2.2 to 1.4 and 1.4 to 2.2, in either direction, and any version to any version. With one HDMI output, everything downstream has to accept the same converted signal.

HDfury Arcana 2 VRR (40Gbps). Converts HDCP 2.3 to 1.4 and 1.4 to 2.3, in either direction. The second output is the real advantage here: if a receiver in your chain is the device refusing the modern source, feed it through HDMI COPY at a specification it accepts while the main output TX0 goes to the display at full bandwidth.

What HDCP is actually doing

HDCP encrypts the video signal between every pair of devices in the chain. Each link negotiates separately, and every device has to agree on a version. HDCP 2.2 and 2.3 are used by 4K streaming and UHD Blu-ray; HDCP 1.4 is what older displays and receivers speak.

A chain fails when one device cannot negotiate the version the source insists on. The source has no way to explain that, so it either shows a message, retries in a loop — which is what the flashing is — or outputs nothing.

Where the HDfury Arcana helps

Both models can convert between HDCP versions in either direction. That is the point of the feature: a source that demands HDCP 2.2 can feed a display or receiver that only speaks 1.4, because the Arcana terminates one encrypted link and starts another.

So if your fault is an older display or an older receiver refusing a modern source, the Arcana is the device that resolves it. If your fault is something else, HDCP conversion will not help and it is worth knowing which is which.

Work through it in this order

1. Try the source directly on the display

Take everything else out. If source to display works, the fault is in a device between them. If it fails there too, the fault is in the source, the display or the cable between them, and nothing further down the chain will fix it.

2. Check the cable before anything else

A marginal cable produces exactly the same symptoms as an HDCP mismatch: intermittent black, flashing, or a picture that drops when the bitrate rises during a bright scene. Swap in a cable you know is good before you change any setting. This is worth doing early because it costs nothing and it is a common cause.

For 4K60 you need a Premium High Speed cable; for 4K120 or anything approaching 40Gbps, an Ultra High Speed cable. Keep copper runs short. Longer runs want an active or optical cable.

3. Check what each device supports

Look up the HDCP version of the display and of the receiver separately. A receiver in the middle of the chain is a frequent culprit: the display is fine, but the receiver only handles 1.4 and everything routed through it fails.

This is also where a second output helps. On the HDfury Arcana 2, HDMI COPY can feed the older receiver at a lower specification while the main output goes to the display at full bandwidth.

4. Reset the handshake

HDCP negotiates at connect and does not retry on its own once it has settled into a failed state. Power everything fully off, then start the audio system, the HDfury Arcana, the display and finally the source, with a few seconds between each. A chain that has been in a failed handshake will often come up clean after this.

When it is not HDCP at all

If the picture is missing only at 4K120 or with VRR enabled, and everything works at 4K60, this is a bandwidth problem rather than a copy protection problem. The chain cannot carry the FRL signal, and the cause is usually the cable or a device that does not genuinely support HDMI 2.1 FRL.

If you get a picture but no sound, HDCP is not involved; audio and video fail separately.

HDMI inputs on the same television often differ in bandwidth and sometimes in HDCP support. Many sets have only one or two ports that carry the full 4K120 specification. Check the manual for which port is which.

My receiver shows an HDCP message but the TV is fine. What now?

The receiver is the limiting device. Either route video around it and send audio separately, or use the HDfury Arcana 2's HDMI COPY output to feed the receiver a signal it can accept.

Does HDCP conversion reduce picture quality?

No. The conversion is on the encryption layer, not the video itself. Any quality change would come from scaling or chroma settings, which are separate features.

Does an HDfury Arcana or HDfury Arcana 2 solve this?

YesIf a modern source is being refused by an older display or receiver. Both models convert between HDCP versions in either direction, which is exactly this case.
