Which HDMI cable do you need for an HDfury Arcana?

Cables cause more Arcana support cases than any setting does, and the advice in the manual is not what most people expect: a cable can be too short as well as too long.

Choose the cable in this order

  1. Use copper between 2 and 4 metres. Too short is a real fault: owners have traced dropouts to a cable of about 30 centimetres between the HDfury Arcana and the display.
  2. Premium High Speed for 4K60, which covers the HDfury Arcana entirely.
  3. Ultra High Speed for 4K120 or anything approaching 40 Gbps, which is what the HDfury Arcana 2 needs on input and main output.
  4. For the link to the soundbar, check 192 kHz ARC support. A cable that carries 600 MHz of video can still fail on that audio signal.
  5. Beyond 4 metres, use an active or optical cable rated for the bandwidth you actually need, rather than a longer passive one.

Which model do you have?

HDfury Arcana (18Gbps). A Premium High Speed cable covers this model entirely: 18 Gbps is the ceiling, so an Ultra High Speed cable buys you nothing on the video path. The link to the sound system still needs 192 kHz ARC support, which is a separate requirement.

HDfury Arcana 2 VRR (40Gbps). Use an Ultra High Speed cable certified for 48 Gbps on both the input and the primary output TX0, because FRL5 runs at up to 40 Gbps. HDMI COPY can often run on a lesser cable, since it usually carries a downscaled or TMDS signal. The eARC link has the same 192 kHz ARC requirement as on the original model.

The length window the manual gives

HDfury's own guidance is unusually specific. Use copper cables of at least 6 feet (2 metres) and at most 12 feet (4 metres). Both ends of that range matter.

The upper limit is intuitive: longer copper loses signal. The lower limit is not, and it is the one that catches people out. The manual describes users chasing distortion and surround channels cutting in and out, and reports that many of them finally traced it to a 1-foot cable between the HDfury Arcana and their display. Very short high-bandwidth cables can behave worse than moderate ones, and a short cable is exactly what people reach for when two devices sit next to each other.

If you need more than 4 metres, do not simply buy a longer copper cable. Use an active or optical cable rated for the bandwidth you actually need.

Which rating for which signal

Up to 4K60 at 18 Gbps — a Premium High Speed cable. This covers the original HDfury Arcana entirely.

4K120, VRR or anything approaching 40 Gbps — an Ultra High Speed cable, certified for 48 Gbps. This is what the Arcana 2 needs on both the input and the main output when you are running FRL signals.

To an eARC soundbar — the requirement is different, and this is where a lot of Atmos hunts end. eARC uses the HDMI Ethernet channel, so the cable has to implement it; High Speed with Ethernet is the minimum. But video rating and audio capability are not the same thing. The manual states it plainly: Atmos over ARC requires a cable that supports 192 kHz ARC, and a cable that carries a 600 MHz video signal perfectly can still fail on the 192 kHz audio signal. So a cable that has proven itself on the video side tells you nothing about this link. For a Sonos Arc, the manual recommends simply using the cable Sonos supplies.

How far the HDfury Arcana can drive a cable

Both models include signal equalisation on the input and the output, which is why they can act as a booster in the middle of a run. The manual gives concrete distances:

1080p — up to 15 metres in and 15 metres out, so 30 metres total through the device.

10.2 Gbps UHD — up to 10 metres.

18 Gbps UHD — up to 5 metres.

Those figures are the reason an Arcana sometimes fixes a long-run problem that has nothing to do with audio. They also show how sharply the usable distance falls as bandwidth rises, which is worth remembering before running a cable to a ceiling-mounted projector.

How a bad cable presents itself

Rarely as an obvious failure. The symptoms look like device faults: intermittent black frames, flicker, a picture that drops out during a bright scene when the bitrate rises, surround channels cutting in and out, or audio distortion that comes and goes.

The manual is blunt about the diagnostic order. If anything at all is behaving strangely in video or audio, your first step should be to establish that the cables between source and HDfury Arcana, and between Arcana and display, are known good at full speed. Not probably good — known good, by substitution.

It also makes a point worth repeating: a cable can pass a 4K60 Atmos signal, show full 600 MHz on the OLED, and still pass the Apple TV 4K Dolby Vision test, while producing intermittent errors. Passing a test once is not the same as being reliable.

What the marketing on the box means

“4K” on the packaging means nothing on its own; it is not a certification. The terms that carry a defined specification are High Speed, Premium High Speed and Ultra High Speed, and the last of those is the only one that guarantees 48 Gbps.

Certified Ultra High Speed cables carry a QR-coded authentication label. If a cable claims 8K or 48 Gbps and has no certification mark, treat the claim as decoration.

NoIf your cable is simply underspecified for the signal. No device compensates for a cable that cannot carry the bandwidth; replace the cable first, before changing any setting.

Both models give the same distances. The difference is what you are pushing through them: 18 Gbps on the Arcana, up to 40 Gbps on the Arcana 2.
